1st Annual Healthy Holiday Cooking Class

It was truly an amazing day for over 150 participants who came out to our first Power To End Stroke Healthy Holiday Cooking Class with celebrity Chef Tre Wilcox. The event took place on Saturday, November 15 at Beebe Memorial Cathedral in Oakland and was hosted by Miranda Wilson from KKSF 103.7 Smooth Jazz.

Open to the entire community, the event first featured a wonderful presentation by Gloria Brown about holiday table ideas and followed with a few helpful tips by etiquette expert Tina Hayes. As quiet as it is sometimes kept, many often have questions about what is right or wrong when it comes to eating at the holiday table and both Gloria and Tina were sure to set the record straight. It was no secret that many were there just to see Chef Wilcox who joined us from Dallas, TX. Once on the cooking stage, the audience truly came alive and just the smells instantly made everyone hunger if not hungrier. Our goal with the event was to offer new recipes that were both healthy and easy for everyone to make. Chef Wilcox did just that. The menu for the day consisted of: Sea Scallops in Truffle Potato Sauce, Parmesan Crusted Chicken Breast in a Pomegranate Brown Butter with Sautéed Mushrooms, Leeks and Kale as well as Smoke Cheddar-Jalapeno Bread Pudding. For dessert, attendees enjoyed a healthy version of Red Velvet Cake and Louisiana Banana Cake with Chocolate-Pecan topping.

After the event, Chef Wilcox was bombarded with questions and photo requests from attendees and everyone noted what a great time they had and unofficially made the event an annual occurence.

We would like to thank everyone, especially Kaiser Permanente, for their support in helping to make this event a huge success. As the American Heart Association continues to move forward with future Power To End Stroke events, we look forward to working with community leaders, citzens and organizations to spread the message that stroke is preventable and we all have the power to save our life and others.
